7 popular communist luxury cars
Today we will present you 7 popular luxury communist cars. Some of the best cars for their time and the communist regime, still liked today.
1. Gas M13/M14
Gas M13 and M14, or the so-called "Chaika", produced by the Gorykovsky Automobile Plant in 1958. This is the smaller brother of the ZIL 111. The M13 was produced from 1959 to 1981 and the M14 from 1977 to 1988.
This is one of the most famous and liked models of the Soviet brand. The M13 was produced with much less innovation, while the next model, the M14, had more electronics, even introducing the world's first electric windows with heating on them.
The look comes from the winged design, fashionable for the time, similar from cars like Mercury and others. The Gas M13 was produced in typical black, white or cherry red, the engine a 5.5 litre V8 with 195 hp. With a top speed of 158mph it was quite a fast luxury car for the time. It was much favoured by the KGB,and Khrushchev, with more powerful versions being produced for them.
The Gas M14 has a 220hp engine, is lower than its sibling and has been upgraded with quite a few extras. The engine is also quite modernized and with quite a few innovations inserted for its time regarding economy and more. This model shifts gears via a lever, while the M13 has buttons. They are fitted with semi-automatic gearboxes. The M14 has air conditioning, power windows, vacuum and a bunch of gadgets. Top speed on the M14 is 175 km/h. The latter model has a short history, as the revelations against Gorbachev necessitated the destruction of all the documentation, drawings and the production lines themselves.
2. Zil 111/114/115/117
The Zil 111 was the first limousine still produced during a wartime situation. Produced in 1958-1967 by the largest Russian company not only for cars but also for trucks and military equipment. After testing the prototype Zil-Moscow in 1956, it won the Guinness World Record for the largest passenger car in the world. The first model based on the prototype with the improved Zill 111 was introduced in 1958, and production began then. The body was a copy of typical American winged cars, more borrowed from Packard models. Zils were ultra modern for their time super luxury cars, equipped with air conditioning, power windows and other gadgets typical of a high end limousine. The engine was a 6 litre, 200 hp V8 with a top speed of 170 km/h. The car won top marks at the 1958 Berlin World's Fair. Subsequent Zil models were radically different, besides the extra extras, there was now a convertible model and a radically different look, even two-door limousines.
3. Tarta 77 and 87
The Tatra has the distinction of being the first true aerodynamic car introduced in 1934. The engine that powered the first model was a 3 litre V8 engine with 60 hp enough to reach 145 km/h. This engine was air-cooled, and was sufficient for the light luxury car. This remains one of the unique communist cars, not only for its time, but to this day. This is one of the limousines that were revered, not only by political figures, but businessmen as well. Subsequent models got more powerful engines of 70 and 75 hp developing up to 160 km/h and even better aerodynamics. For its time it was one of the fastest cars using a not so powerful engine.
4. Gas M21 and M24 or Volga
In addition to the 4 cidron models, limousines were also produced with the Chaika engines. Oh yes, believe me they are worth it. There is no point in saying the engine specs, look at the data for the Gull. Everyone knows what a Volga looks like, but these Volgas were the next most liked among Russian politicians and especially the KGB. Naturally fitted with luxury for their nudges. They show pretty good performance with that powerful engine and a much lighter body than the Gaz M13 and Zil 111. Faster and more maneuverable. Even the regular model boasts good qualities. This modification had 602 cars produced according to unofficial data and was sorted with automatic 3 and very rarely 4 speed gearbox. It was produced in 1962, unknown until when. This model was not publicly available.
5. Tatra 603 and 613
Another classic communist-era limousine with lots of options. Again with air cooling and a small 2.5 liter V8 engine and as much as 100 hp. The car was desirable not only in Eropa but also in Cuba and even China... This model was introduced earlier but the luxury version came out much later before and after the brief downfall of the Tatra company in the 70s and 80s. The next model put into mass production was the 613, which had twice as powerful air-cooled 3.5 V8 engine with 200 hp and a top speed of 225 km/h...
UNIQUE TARTAR! Despite its not so beautiful appearance..... is unique!
6. Gas 12 ZIM
Produced from 1950 to 1960, the Gas 12 ZIM was a product of a collaboration with Buick on an American design, improved of course. The car was even fitted with Chrysler's 6 cylinder inline engine. It wasn't the most luxurious performance, but it was still a low-end 6 seater sedan/limousine.
5. ZIL 41047
Years of production 1983. Zil 41047 is an ultra luxury limousine. A favourite of dignitaries and the KGB of course. This model was the longest produced Russian limousine, until the new ZIL 4112R model appeared in 2012. Over the years it has been constantly improved with various technical modifications. Even the engine has stayed the same until the last, but the technology of using it as well as its electrification have changed a lot. The Zil 41047 is the slightly stylistically modified 4104. The only downside might be the unchanged automatic transmission with only 3 speeds, which doesn't really help it to be economical, nor faster... Yay for the powerful engine.
Luckily for you, some of these cars can be seen in Bulgaria.
