A road traffic accident is an accident in which material damage is caused to a vehicle as a result of driving on or off the road.
BEFORE THE ACCIDENT
The most important thing is to be able to foresee the lurking danger. The main cause of road accidents is not so much a technical malfunction or poor traffic organization, but incorrect actions of road users. Often, it is not a specific mistake that leads to serious consequences, but a combination of circumstances.
In many cases, road accidents have psychological causes – for some reason, many people develop a passion for risky actions. Risk is the choice of actions that, if unsuccessful, leave a person in a worse position than before:
- drivers choose a speed that is not appropriate for the circumstances;
- drivers make dangerous overtaking moves;
- pedestrians cross the roadway in places with poor visibility;
- pedestrians cross the road between moving vehicles or enter it because of parked vehicles;
- deliberate disregard for traffic rules;
- Cyclists ride on the roadway without knowing the traffic rules.
The danger is usually underestimated for two reasons:
- the person is not aware;
- A person may be aware of the danger, but due to carelessness or arrogance, does not want to bother with following the rules.
Often the determining factor is that people are well aware of the risk factors, but believe that bad luck can happen to anyone but not to them.
In road traffic, safety means a person's ability to avoid emergency situations while driving, and if such a situation does arise, to successfully confront the danger. In short, it is the ability to avoid danger.
IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT
In the car
If you are in a car immediately before the accident and see that the collision cannot be avoided, try to protect yourself.
If the car behind you is about to rear-end your car for some reason, try to squeeze into the back of your seat and press the back of your head against the headrest. The biggest danger in a rear-end collision is a life-threatening fracture of the cervical vertebrae.
If you are about to be hit from the front and are wearing a seat belt, try to protect your face and especially your eyes with your hands and forearms, reducing the risk of injury from shrapnel.
If there are no seat belts, then – to avoid a life-threatening impact on the steering wheel or windshield – throw yourself onto the seat, assuming a horizontal position.
If there are no seat belts in the back seat of the car, then, before impact, "fall" back into the seat, in a horizontal position.
AFTER AN ACCIDENT
Action plan
What to do if you have been involved in a traffic accident:
- keep a fire extinguisher handy if possible, as there is a risk of a vehicle fire;
- if the car catches fire, try to get the victim out of it without endangering your life;
- check the condition of the people involved in the incident (contact them - are they responding, check their breathing and pulse, inspect for external injuries, determine where it hurts);
- talk to the victim(s), checking if they are conscious;
- stopping bleeding;
Help other road users
A person who witnesses a traffic accident unwittingly takes on a great responsibility. Everyone is responsible for helping the injured, but everyone's readiness for this is different. Few know how to provide the necessary first aid, but everyone is able to help to some extent by calling for help.
If you happen to be at the scene of the accident, or it is happening right in front of you, then the first thing you should do is approach and talk to the person(s) in the car. Try to connect with the victim by talking to them.
This way you can find out if there are any injuries and if the people involved in the accident are conscious. If the people in the car can communicate, you should ask them if everyone is safe and if you should call an ambulance. If there are no serious injuries, then the people involved in the accident should decide for themselves whether they want to call the police on the scene or not.
Roadside assistance in case of a traffic accident
To remove damaged cars from the roadway, you need to call Roadside assistance, which to repatriate the crashed cars and free up the roadway for normal vehicle movement.
Evacuation of the vehicle to a car service or to a specified address.
On-site assistance if needed.
Assistance in completing documentation related to a traffic accident.
